Positivity Challenge | Designing From My Closet

One thing I did not expect when I began blogging over two years ago were the connections I would make with other women.  For some reason, I expected to face controversy and mean-spirited people who would pretty much laugh me off the internet.  Facing those unwarranted fears have gotten me in such a better place in my life and I now cherish the relationships I have with all of you.

White has been a recurring color theme in many of my posts lately.  The crisp and classic feeling it gives is something I always find myself drawn to.  I am also so very surprised how many women steer clear of it because they are afraid of getting dirty.  Since I am prone to pretty much getting some sort of something be it food or dirt on me every single day, I still have yet to get anything on me that has not proven to come out with my laundry stain spray.  And besides that, I get dirty no matter what color I wear and it shows just as much.  Anyhow, today I am highlighting my love for not only white, but specifically white eyelet.  This lace adds so much texture and dimension without going way too girly.

Red Riding Hood: A Casual Valentine’s Day Look

Sentiments get me.

Reminiscing about loved ones that are no longer with you can sneak up at the most unexpected times.

That is exactly what happened when I was browsing at one of my favorite thrift shops and I saw a red knitted cardigan with a hood.  I rarely wear red and have maybe one other piece in the color in my closet.  Not that I have anything against red, it has just not been on a special enough garment to come home with me.  Really it was not the color that attracted me, but rather the texture.  The chunky knit with a semi open weave reminded me so much of something my grandmother would have made for herself.  I have a couple of cardigans of hers, but she was a tiny woman, and well, I am not, so wearing them myself is out of the question.  This sweater however was so reminiscent of her pieces that I had to get it.

I posted a picture of the label on Instagram when I got home asking if anyone was familiar with Moda International because I had no idea.

Some wonderful ladies informed me that it is a Victoria’s Secret brand.  Who knew?  Not me!  Well, really that did not matter to me as I am not a brand name person, but curiosity was getting to me.  Anyhow, I came up with a simple and fun way to wear it for a casual Valentine’s Day look…my Red Riding Hood look.

A simple white swing tunic tee I just picked up from the clearance section at Torrid underneath the cardigan makes the orangy-red stand out.  Skinny jeans in a dark wash make the outfit easy to wear for a day date.  And true to character, I added a funky colored wood necklace that I got from Anthropologie a while ago as well as a zebra pattern clutch.  This entire ensemble is a bit retro vintage with billowing bell sleeves that makes me smile.  To finish it off, my Payless black lace up flats get added to the mix.

So that is my sentimental outfit that ended up being a perfect fit for the upcoming Valentine’s Day!  Do you ever get pieces because they remind you of something happy?

Shopping in Las Vegas

This past week, my husband and I went to Las Vegas for a little vacation. Since we live in Southern California, it is easy for us to drive there and enjoy the beautiful desert landscape along the way.  Part of the trip is being able to shop, after all, that is one of the features Vegas is known for.  I had been saving a portion of my monthly budget for a while so I could have a little extra to have and I wanted to share my experiences with you.

Half way to LV, we like to stop in Barstow, CA to stretch our legs and look around the Tanger Outlet Center.  My two favorite shops to look in have always been Banana Republic Factory and LOFT Outlet.  It has been quite a while since I have been to these and found that since the discovery of my personal style, I was not as interested in what they had to offer.  I also had created a wish list prior to leaving (which I have NEVER done before) that prevented me from straying off course.  I tried on two tops at BR that I passed on and two skirts at LOFT.The LOFT Outlet at Tanger Outfit Center in Barstow, CaliforniaThe skirt I decided to get at LOFT was something that was on my list: a slimmer cut chambray skirt.  This one sports an elastic waistband and cute pockets.  The points I enjoyed about this particular one was that it was a cross between a pencil and full skirt, the to-the-knee length, and soft texture.  I plan on wearing this two ways so far…one with the poncho I got at Forever 21 and with a plaid button down (like this Ava & Viv one from Target).
The points I enjoyed about this particular chambray skirt from LOFT is that it sports an elastic waistband, has cute pockets, is a cross between a pencil and full skirt, the to-the-knee length, and soft texture. The next shopping hot spot in Las Vegas itself was at The Fashion Show Mall.  Anthropologie had moved to their location from The Forum Shops in Caesars Palace a year prior and this was my first time visiting it. Anthropologie in The Fashion Show Mall, Las VegasMy only purchase at Anthropologie ended up being this colorful midi skirt.  The texture of it is similar to a fuzzy sweatshirt and has an asymmetrical hemline that you can’t see very well in the angle of my picture.  The skirt was an item on my list as was the shearling vest, but I found it to be a tad too long for my preference, so I decided to pass on this one, even though it was gorgeous and beyond buttery soft.Anthropologie Marini Wrap Skirt and Backcountry VestMy next stop in the mall was Forever 21.  The large, two floor shop had a plus size section in it I wanted to check out.  The experience there was like night and day in comparison to the time I had shared with you in my Shop With Me video because the customer service there was atrocious.  Being ignored and actively avoided by sales associates was a real bummer.  The plus size section had to have been triple the size of the store I went to in California so I did try on a few items including this olive tank and patchwork faux leather skirt.  I liked them both, but between the heat in the dressing room and the dejected attitude I was in due to the people, I passed on them.

Forever 21 Plus Classic Chiffon Top in Olive and Faux Leather Colorblocked-Paneled SkirtI also stopped in Francesca’s and Charming Charlie and got a few more items on my wish list.  Walking back to our hotel, we passed by this tranquil waterfall that I was ready to just listen to for hours. It was a peacefully moment amongst the constant chatter of vacationers and ringing of slot machines that soothed my soul. Waterfall outside of the Wynn and Palazzo Hotels in Las Vegas
Back in the hotel room I took a few pictures of the pieces I got at Francesca’s and CC since I totally forgot to do so in the stores.

A floppy felt hat in a light tan is exactly what I was looking for.  It was even more fitting when my husband spotted it in Charming Charlie and told me it “looked like me”.  The shorter shearling vest was found at Francesca’s and I love the waist detail on this one. It is so unbelievably soft.  I plan on wearing this over long sleeve tops and dresses for both the fall and winter seasons. Charming Charlie Floppy Hat and Fracesca's Naira Faux Fur VestThe other piece I got at Francesca’s was this gray cocoon cardigan with crochet details.  This was the one item I got that was not on my list, but it was too adorable to pass up.
Gray Cocoon Cardigan with Crochet Detail from Francesca'sOn the way back home we stopped in Barstow again where I browsed Old Navy. A dark denim jacket and long sleeve olive tee that I plan on wearing with the Anthro skirt were great finds. Shopping in Las Vegas | Designing From My Closet We did an extensive search for some brown suede over the knee boots with a wedge heel without any luck so when we got back home I scoured the Internet.  I found the Tamara Wide Calf Boot by Comfortview at Jessica London that fit all of my criteria.  I am still waiting for them to arrive and my hopes are high that they will work. I ordered them in wide width to fit in the calf. I plan on doing a full review on them when I receive them.

Tamara Wide Calf Boot from Jessica London All in all, I am very happy with the purchases I made and I can’t wait to show you how I plan on style these pieces.  I am sure you will be seeing them soon in posts this month.

We had a fabulous time on our vacation which included much more than the shopping I shared with you here.  I am so grateful to have such a wonderful husband that I enjoy spending so much time with.  He is truly my best friend.

Have you ever been shopping in Las Vegas?  What places do you usually go to?  Or if you have never been, do you have a mall/shop you have wanted to go to there?

Faking a Waist

Maxi with Denim A

Even among plus size ladies, there are so many body types.  I love seeing how different stylish ladies tackle the many issues that come with fit.  For me, being short-waisted and essentially not having a defined waist at all has allowed me to experiment with how to play with proportion.  Sometimes it is a hit, and sometimes it is a miss.  Either way, it opens up my world to all the possibilities out there.  Maxi with Denim C

The last time I wore this bold, patterned skirt, I tucked in a lace top into it for a dressy look.  This time, I decided to make it a little more casual and to use one of favorite tricks for “faking” a waist.  By leaving my ivory tank untucked it makes my torso look visually longer.  To make the outfit complete, I added a wide braided belt to define my “waist” and a denim jacket to disguise the fact the belt really does not go in the way a waist would.  It almost implies that it curves in.Maxi with Denim E

Luke decided to join me on this photo shoot as he kept hearing the camera click.  He is absolutely running me ragged, but come on, who can resist that face?

I am also doing a little bit of pattern mixing with my clutch and how the blues look together.  I love this size of handbag for both day and night.  It fits just the right amount of essentials.  It is also a sneak peek into what is a huge project I have been working on.  If you follow me on Instagram you have seen my announcement that I have partnered with AllyOops Boutique to have an exclusive Designing From My Closet collection.  I am knee deep in completing the curating process and I cannot wait to show you everything! Maxi with Denim DUntil then…
