Statement Coat & Sweater Cardigan Lookbook

Statement Coat & Sweater Cardigan Lookbook | Designing From My Closet | Plus & Inbetweenie Fashion Blog

I have been planning on doing this post for quite some time and the weather here in Southern California has not been cooperating with me to be able to wear cold-weather outfits so I hope I am not featuring this too late in the game.  Statement outerwear is something I always looked forward to when I lived in the Midwest.

Be it coats, sweaters, cardigans, or ponchos, I love having a variety of patternful and colorful options to choose from when there is a chill in the air.  While I know some of you are experiencing loads of snow, my footwear or under layers may not work, but I wanted this four outfit Lookbook I put together to give inspiration to you when putting looks together for the remainder of the winter.  All of these looks are inspired by interior design and I hope you enjoy.

This kimono shaped sweater cardigan is not from the plus size collection, but the shape allows me to wear it with ease.  The Aztec pattern and blue accent color is in direct coorilation with the pillow and wall color from the interior design inspiration.  By pairing this statement piece with a basic tee and jeans, it elevates them to ultra cool casual status.

This sweater coat is a dream come true for me.  It is the most I have ever paid for a single piece of clothing probably since my wedding gown.  I saved up for several months and got it on sale right at the last minute before it sold out.  I have no regrets spending what I did because I absolutely love it.  The vintage cane back chair in the inspiration picture is one I reupholstered myself in this beautiful blue and green Ikat fabric.  I love the sky blue pillow on it and how it takes life in fashion through the pullover sweater underneath the coat.  The long length of the sweater and crisp white jeans give this a winter wonderland feel.

I wanted to do a little bit of pattern mixing with this coat so when I looked at this interior design inspiration, the floral artwork jumped out at me, especially because my coat resembles my pillows on the sofa.  My floral blouse peeks through just enough to give a lovely contrast against the linear abstract print of the coat.  A cinch belt gives this coat a little bit of shape as well.

When I painted this over scale pattern on my master bedroom wall, it made a bold statement as well as setting the tone for the entire space.  The same is the case with this patterned poncho.  By draping it over a simple sweater dress, it takes on an elegant vibe.  Some gold “hardware” in form of a modern pendant necklace and a colorful handbag, similar to how the green in the room pops, complete this look.

Brown Leather Skirt from Forever 21 Plus

As I have shared before, I have a list.  Not just any list, but one that keeps track of specific articles of clothing that I am looking for.  One item that has been on my list for over three years has been a brown faux leather skater skirt.  I would find so many in straight sizes and was thrilled to see so many black ones come on the plus size scene, but this garment has eluded me until now.Forever 21 Plus Faux Leather Skater Skirt in Brown | Designing From My Closet

I saw this dark brown skirt on the Forever 21 site and was lucky enough to try it on in person at a local store.  The color is a rich chocolate tone with nice stitching and seam details on the front and back.  It is surprisingly soft for being faux and the underside is a suede like knit texture that feels nice on the skin.  Because of the light weight of the textile, it flows beautifully and is not stiff at all.  The waistband does have a bit of stretch, as does the entire skirt, with a side zipper and snap button.  After reading the reviews online, it was claiming that the waistband was very large in comparison to other F21+ skirts, so that made me hopeful as I have a large waist, making it difficult to fit into these types of skirts.  I am wearing a 2X and it fits me great at my natural waist.  Pulling the skirt up several inches to a high waisted position would be ideal, but the 19″ length makes it too short for my taste.Forever 21 Plus Faux Leather Skater Skirt in Brown | Designing From My Closet

For it’s first wear, I paired it with a long cardigan with a watercolor print of a giraffe and a ivory lace tank.  I love the whimsical twist that this takes to the more edgy skirt.  I tucked in the tank and bloused it just a bit for a relaxed feel.  And by wearing the cardigan open with the sleeves pushed up, it continues that vibe.  Since the cardigan has such a busy pattern, I opted to wear a long gold chain necklace with simple ivory painted beads that I made several years ago.Forever 21 Plus Faux Leather Skater Skirt in Brown | Designing From My Closet

The other accessories I chose to complete this look was a green and tan woven clutch that ties into the green leaf of the cardigan and a copper and turquoise cuff that picks up on the blue sky.  The entire look overall has a earthy feel tied in with the whimsy.Forever 21 Plus Faux Leather Skater Skirt in Brown | Designing From My Closet

I am so glad I found this skirt to finally cross it off of my list.  There are so many ways I want to wear it this fall and winter that I am sure this is not the last time you will see it on the blog.  I am already envisioning tights and boots, vests and sweaters.  And a big thanks to Forever 21 for finally coming out with this piece!Forever 21 Plus Faux Leather Skater Skirt in Brown | Designing From My Closet

The Dress I Won: Rachel Pally Review + Survey

A little while back, I attended the SBR Pop Up in Los Angeles hosted by Reah of Styled by Reah.  It was a blast to be able to meet so many of my favorite bloggers as well as Reah herself.  She was so sweet and kind.  She contacted me later in the day after I had gone home that I had won one of her prizes from using the hashtag #SBRPopUp on one of my Instagram posts.  The prize was a gift card to Rachel Pally, an LA based designer who creates gorgeous jersey clothing.

I finally decided on a sleeveless printed wrap dress from the sale section.  I actually ordered the last one available, but I wanted to go ahead and review it since it is a good example of many of the jersey dresses that are still currently for sale online.Rachel Pally Dress | Designing From My ClosetWhen I first opened up the package with my dress, I instantly knew that this was like no other jersey dress I had ever tried on before.  The knit fabric was heavy, not thin at all, and the colors were very vibrant and pigmented.  Although this is a style from a spring/summer collection due to its white background, I still feel like it is appropriate for a California fall with the right accessories.  And honestly, like most items I purchase online, it was even more beautiful in person than shown online.Rachel Pally Dress | Designing From My ClosetI picked up on the vibrant violet and navy in the dress and paired it with a luxe fuchsia pashmina and dark denim jacket.  These two turn this dress into an autumn dream for me.  Rachel Pally Dress | Designing From My ClosetThe skirt on this dress is very full and had a lot of fabric which made it fun to swish around in all day. My new lace up flats make this whole look ultra girly. Rachel Pally Dress | Designing From My ClosetA chunky link bracelet adds a touch of glamour. I also love how the lining of my handbag blends so well with the colors of the look. The entire outfit is a true example of a high-low priced ensemble. By mixing brands gives me a personilized look.Rachel Pally Dress | Designing From My ClosetThis dress is a true wrap and I love it even without the jacket. It’s quality is impeccable and I feel so blessed to have won this special dress.Rachel Pally Dress | Designing From My ClosetOutfit Details

From Wall Mural to Outfit {Inspired by Interior Design} + A Couple of Mini Jewelry ReFashions

If you do not know by now, I am an interior designer.  One of my favorite features I love to incorporate into my designs are decorative wall treatments and murals.  I even have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to the topic.  Below are two treatments I pinned from Apartment Therapy with one being a bold orange triangle pattern and the other, fun colorful dots.  They both give a flavor of whimsy, and are incorporated into a much more sophisticated palette with the MidCentury Modern credenza and the sleek modern stools.  Since these have been on my digital inspiration board for quite some time, they are a true representation of my style and the reason for today’s outfit.

When I first saw the Marini Wrap Skirt on the Anthropologie website, I instantly thought of these two wall treatments.  The combination of colorful triangles and the asymmetrical hemline made me swoon.  I did not realize the textile was a soft knit similar to a sweatshirt until I tried it on during my Las Vegas trip.  I love that this skirt is a nod to the Mid Century Modern style that I love in interiors as well.  And since it has a stretchy elastic waistband and overall stretch from the knit, I was able to make this straight sized skirt work for me.Anthropologie Marini Wrap Skirt with Olive Tee and Denim Jacket | Designing From My Closet

To continue with the Mid Century theme, I selected a macrame tote with tons of fringe.  It reminds me of those fun plant holders I used to have in my childhood home.  On the top, a Dried Herb long sleeve tee knotted on the side is a neutral backdrop paired with a dark denim jacket layer.  These create a low key, relaxed vibe that I like to wear on a daily basis.Anthropologie Marini Wrap Skirt with Olive Tee and Denim Jacket | Designing From My Closet

These pierced wedges have been in my wardrobe for several years now and have proven to be one of my favorite shoes.  Because I live in Southern California, open toe shoes like this rarely get put away, but I like how the illusion of coverage from the bands give me a more “fall” look without having to put on a pair of booties and get overheated.

Anthropologie Marini Wrap Skirt with Olive Tee and Denim Jacket | Designing From My ClosetFor the jewelry, I kept going with the more modern feel of the interior inspiration.  The first was this wood and rope collar necklace from Forever 21.  I love how it has a much more luxe feel despite its rather low price point.  The only issue with it was it was challenging to put on.  This is not the first time this has happened to me and not from only less expensive pieces, but from some of my higher priced necklaces.  Whenever the clasp is attached directly to the end of a necklace that has a thick end it makes it difficult to hold my fingers onto the clasp with it open and put it behind my neck to attach.  It has caused me to get rid of several necklaces in the past, but once I took the time to do a quick fix, I know I do not have to pass on pieces with this issue.
Make a necklace easier to put on: 1-This necklace has a lobster clasp attached right to the main part of the necklace hardware making it challenging to grasp when it is behind your neck, 2-With a needle nose plier open up the eye that is holding the clasp and remove it, 3-Add a small piece of chain (found at any hobby or jewelry store) and close the eye with the pliers, 4-Attach the clasp to the end of the chain. The extension gives your fingers room to hold while you are attaching the necklace.
For my first mini “ReFashion”, I am fixing this little problem with my necklace by taking the following steps: 1-This necklace has a lobster clasp attached right to the main part of the necklace hardware making it challenging to grasp when it is behind your neck, 2-With a needle nose plier open up the eye that is holding the clasp and remove it, 3-Add a small piece of chain (found at any hobby or jewelry store) and close the eye with the pliers, 4-Attach the clasp to the end of the chain. The extension gives your fingers room to hold while you are attaching the necklace.

For my second mini “ReFashion”, I am showing how I made the bracelet I am wearing in this outfit.  I got this DIY Jewelry Kit at Hobby Lobby that contained a piece of faux tortoiseshell link to make a necklace.  I thought the link was a little small in scale for my taste so I decided to make it into a bracelet instead.Hobby Lobby DIY Jewelry Kit: I tuned this tortoiseshell link necklace into a bracelet.Instead of using the provided leatherette strings, I attatched large jump rings and a T-bar closure to give me a beautiful bracelet.I made this tortoiseshell bracelet from a Hobby Lobby DIY jewelry kit | Designing From My Closet

These quick and easy fixes have given me two great pieces of jewelry.  As far as the necklace is concerned, not only does the added chain give me an easier time putting this necklace on, it gives me the length I like for this to lay the way I prefer.Forever 21 Wood and Rope Collar Necklace | Designing From My Closet

This skirt is one of the more pricier pieces in my closet at the moment, and I am so happy that I splurged on it.  It provides such a unique flair that is truly my style and I will gladly pass on having several less expensive skirts hanging in my closet to have just this one.  With all the colors in the skirt, I can see this having multiple possibilities with top pairings.Anthropologie Marini Wrap Skirt with Olive Tee and Denim Jacket | Designing From My Closet

Whimsical Elephants

Elephant Print Shirt from Forever 21 Plus with Girlfriend Jeans from Catherines

One of the elements I listed out in my first Anthropologie Style Plus Size Clothing post was whimsical. It was for that very reason I decided to give this button down shirt with elephants on it a try when I was shopping at Forever 21.  It is so similar to the Daytrip Buttondown that Anthropologie used to carry a few years ago.

Elephant Print Shirt from Forever 21 Plus with Girlfriend Jeans from Catherines

Button down shirts and I have not had the best of relationships in the past so I was hesitant to even put another one on my body. And when I did I discovered that it was the relaxed, flowy fabric that made all the difference in the world. It had been the stiffer, more structured shirts that made me feel like I needed to be heading to a corporate setting. Elephant Print Shirt from Forever 21 Plus with Girlfriend Jeans from Catherines

To style this white & black shirt, I kept it pretty simple and laid back by rolling up the sleeves and front tucking it into a pair of lightly distressed girlfriend jeansElephant Print Shirt from Forever 21 Plus with Girlfriend Jeans from Catherines

To jazz it up a bit I wore two bracelets and two rings. It was a happy accident when I put this stretch gem bracelet on with the gold square bangle over top. I love the look it creates. Elephant Print Shirt from Forever 21 Plus with Girlfriend Jeans from Catherines

The new aviators are a bargain buy from Big Lots of all places. Mix all of this together along with my Louis Vuitton handbag and I truly have a “high-low” outfit. I love mixing brands from all price points like this to create a unique look. Elephant Print Shirt from Forever 21 Plus with Girlfriend Jeans from Catherines

I was a bit shocked to see that this elephant print shirt was already sold out online since I first showed it here on my Shop With Me video post a few weeks ago, but I have listed a few whimsical options below. And if you have a Forever 21 store with a plus size section in it near you, I would check there too.Living Room V

And true to my “Designing From My Closet” nature, I have an elephant in my living room as well.  I love the whimsy this pillow brings to this little corner of the room.
