Style Detail Highlight: The Paperbag Waist

Style Detail Highlight: The Paperbag Waist | Designing From My Closet

Looking through the latest fashion magazines, one silhouette that stood out to me strongly was the paperbag waist.  The highwaisted cut of pants and skirts with pleats that gather around the waist with a sash belt is not a new idea as it has been cycled through trends throughout the years.  For me, it is a cut that has always appealed to me, but in the past I have allowed insecurities about my body shape deter me away from actually wearing it.  Now that I have fully embraced myself, I am overjoyed to be wearing the fun fashion of the paperbag waist!

I now have three pairs of this waistline in varying colors and leg cut.  Today I am showing you a striped pair in blue and white from the Who What Wear collection at Target.  They also come in a black and cream color combination as well as in both misses and plus sizes.

The drama these pants provide are exactly what I love.  They have vertical stripes with the cuff being horizontal.  The straight leg gives a nice relaxed feel to go along with the textured seersucker feeling textile.  I paired them with some Urban Outfitters peep toe mules that I thrifted and a Forever 21 zippered satchel I got off of Poshmark.

On top, I played with my favorite combination of print mixing of stripes and florals by wearing an embroidered mesh crop top from Forever 21.  I layered it over a simple white tank top and tucked it in to the high waisted bottoms.  I love how the blue goes so well with the stripes of the pant.

Because Spring weather can be so unpredictable being warm then cool all within one day, I popped on a thrifted Free People linen olive green jacket.  This entire outfit was perfect to wear on Mother’s Day as we celebrated.

  1. I confess that I always steered away from these styles for the very reason you mentioned… body issues…fear that the gathers would…*gasp* add the appearance of a few pounds! Praise God he has helped me with those issues tremendously, but the first time I saw these styles in magazines I still felt those old dragons rise inside me! But, we’ve pushed them back down, cause gosh darn, they’re just so stinkin’ cute! I love these ones you’re wearing! They look wonderful with this mesh top! I’ll have to swing by our Target and see if they have them in my size! 😁
