Polka Dots & Flowers: An Office Appropriate way to Mix Prints

Mixing prints can get tricky sometimes.  And throwing in “office appropriate” can add even more confusion to the mix.  I am a big believer in showing your personal style when it comes to getting dressed for work.  And although some offices and other work places have distinct dress codes, I wanted to show you an outfit I pulled together for a recent client meeting that says professional, with a creative twist.

A while ago, I wrote a Pattern Mixing: A How To Guide that you may be interested in reading or re-reading for the formula I use for mixing prints.  I did use that same philosophy, but also cheated a bit.  Another tip I would like to pass on if you are interested in mixing prints and patterns, but have some challenges with it is to purchase items from a specific clothing line, collection, or designer.  Today for example, my two printed pieces are both from the Who What Wear line from Target.  Their vibe and style are still consistent, so it was almost a no-brainer.

And might I say, ARG!!!  I am messing with a new camera and while I did color my hair a shade lighter, this pictures came out really over exposed.  Bare with me as I figure this guy out throughout the next few upcoming posts.

Anyhow, back to the outfit.  A polka dot midi skirt in black and white gets paired with a tie blouse that has an oversized floral print.  The flower reminds me of a chrysanthemum, but I am not sure if it is and regardless, I love it.  What I love it that the scale of the two prints are different so it creates contrast as well as the blouse contains the black and white scheme of the skirt along with a light blue and olive green.  These two colors give me opportunities to add another color to the mix without worrying about it clashing.

With that being said, I instantly gravitated towards my linen blend olive green swing jacket that I seem to be living in.  Although it is not the traditional blazer, it provides a much more relaxed feeling.  And I must admit, it reminds me of an artists smock.  How appropriate for this creative gal!

For styling, I left the tie on the blouse open acting as a thin scarf over the jacket.  A simple gold bar necklace, tan satchel (yes, I love to wear brown with black and you can do it too), and metallic snake print pumps (similar).  The details to look at if you want to mix prints for office wear is the cut, silhouette, and fabric.  If it is a familiar type of garment, such as a my midi skirt, it is easier to transition this print into an office appropriate look.

  1. Great outfit, Janeane. I love your take on print mixing as it is classic and almost subtle, which is why I think it works for the office, or in my case the retail arena. Putting the jacket over the top just finishes the outfit off so well. And your shoes are on trend for fall. This is another outfit that is going in my folder for future inspiration. Thanks for sharing your creativity. – Amy

    1. Yes, that is exactly what I was trying to get across in this post, thank you. I can’t believe I found those pumps while thrifting, they are amazing.
