Creating an Outfit Around a Statement Necklace

Creating An Outfit Around A Statement Necklace

It was only about five years ago that I began wearing statement necklaces.  In fact, prior to that, I was a little intimidated by them.  I thought they would be difficult to wear and challenging to style.  I also thought they may be fussy or complicated looking.  Once I started venturing into wearing them, all of my preconceived notions went out the window.  I was totally wrong on every standpoint.  Now I have a full collection of statement necklaces that I wear on the daily.  These necklaces complete my looks by adding them as a finishing touch and on occasion are the basis for the outfit itself.

I recently picked up a gorgeous ring style necklace from TJMaxx in golds, blues, and faux tortoiseshell and wanted to feature it in a special post.  Today I am going to talk about how I took this statement necklace and created an outfit around it.  This can be applied really to any statement necklace you may have, or if you are new to wearing them or if you wanting to start wearing them.

FIRST

The first thing I take into account when I am looking at my statement necklace is the color or colors.  You can go one of two ways when it comes to color and that is to match/monochromatic or to contrast/compliment with your clothing choices.  I am going refer to my necklace that has blue, gold, browns, and tans.  In this outfit, I selected to match my necklace with my outfit my choosing a blue top and tan jacket.  To contrast this necklace I could go with a beautiful orange top which sounds like something I will do in the future.  It would also be a standout against a white dress being the only color in the look.

The second thing to consider is the length of the necklace.  This particular one I have hangs shorter and lays nicely along my collarbone.  A higher scoop neckline compliments this length as it frames out.  This would look great with a v-neckline as well.

The style of the statement necklace also determines what sorts of clothing items you want to pair with it.  In my look, the necklace is on the dressier side, but it can be worn in a casual outfit as well.  It is very eclectic and modern looking so I selected a complimentary outfit with the slouchy cargo jacket and skinny jeans.

To complete the styling of my look, I chose to bring in more of the blue and brown by tying a vintage scarf around my wrist as a bracelet.  It also introduces another color into the look.  A large brown handbag and tan heeled sandals are perfectly neutral while still adding interest through their subtle texture.

Statement necklaces are the perfect way to complete off a look, whether it be casual or dressy.  I think that it makes even a bigger statement with a casual outfit because it can take the most basic of pieces and make you look like a million bucks.  Some of my favorite places to shop for statement necklaces are Anthropologie, Charming Charlie, Poshmark, Sylca Designs, and TJMaxx.

  1. LOVE that necklace!! And like you, I’d have gone with the outfit you did. Contrasting colors are very difficult for me to wrap my head around for me to wear! But thanks to reading your blog, and a couple others, I’m trying new looks, and pushing myself to find my “style”, and who knows, contrasting colors could be a good look on me!

    1. Thanks Donna! And I will have you know I push myself constantly to try new things, sometimes I find I like it, sometimes I find its just not for me, I think the key is to try. I hope you are enjoying finding your style!

  2. I love statement necklaces, and your collection is truly enviable. I kind of live for your Instagram posts pairing your day’s necklace with a textured top, printed scarf, or colorful handbag. I approaching building my wardrobe like a curator, and I see that in your wardrobe choices and outfit pairings too. These are great tips. I’ve paraphrased it as:

    1. Color play (you can coordinate or you can contrast; consult the color wheel!)
    2. Consider the length of your necklace when picking a neckline
    3. Pick a theme to build the rest of your outfit from there

So obviously I took something away from this post! I always appreciate how educational and inspiring your posts are. They’re always translatable to one’s own closet!
