Ah, the casual weekend outfit.  It is always great to have that relaxed, laid back look for hanging out with friends or just heading to the grocery store.  Casual outfits are sometimes a rarity to see on fashion blogs because a dress with some stilettos gets so much more reaction.  And lets face it, it is a beautiful thing.  But life is not all dresses and heels, so today’s post is a focus on those times in life when you want a pulled together casual outfit.

A simple tee and some denim capris can be ever so basic, but when you do a few simple tricks like adding a cute necklace and a pair of short block heel sandals as well as styling the tee instead of letting it just hang out or tucking it in, you can come up with a fabulous look!

First of all, this tee from Avenue is no ordinary shirt.  It comes in several gorgeous colors and I selected this vibrant orchid.  The thickness is absolutely spot on, so no thin see through problems here.  And the denim capris, also from Avenue, are insanely comfortable.  For reference, I am 5’5″ and am wearing an 18.

To add a bit more style to this look, I am going to show you four different styling tricks with tucking and knotting that I love to take a boxy tee and turning it into a draped top.

The Partial Tuck

By just slipping in just a few inches on one side of the front of the tee into the bottoms gives a beautiful draped effect.

The Belt Loop

Taking a gathered piece of the tee and looping it through the belt loop and then into the pocket gives it a fun twist.

The Front Knot

A tried and true styling trick is the knot that you can position as high or low on your hips or waist as you want as well as taking it as tight or loose as you want.

The Hidden Knot

By turning the tee inside out and then doing the same knot effect as the front knot you get a more refined look because the knot gets hidden when you turn the shirt right side out.

Now after you have mastered your favorite tucking/knotting technique, some cute shoes and necklace are the last step.  I adore these sling back sandals that have a raffia wrapped block heel.

  1. My favorite is definitely the front knot. And if you can believe it, I’ve never tried any of these styles! I guess I just didn’t think someone with no waistline anymore should do anything but let her tee hang down! But I’m going to try the front knot and see how it looks on me! Thanks for the demo, Janeane!

  2. Great post! I love that you did basics. Sometimes it seems fashion bloggers can get so caught up in showing the latest and greatest looks, they forget that’s not where most of us live every day. These are basic, but cute, and flattering. I’d have to say the front knot I’d my favorite, but maybe that’s because it’s always been a go-to for me.😉
