2 Pieces, 3 Outfits: Remixing Your Wardrobe

2 Pieces, 3 Outfits: Remixing Your Wardrobe | Designing From My Closet | Plus & Inbetweenie Fashion Blog

Maximizing the pieces I purchase to their fullest potential is something I try to do.  My closet is a playground for me to mix and match to create new and creative looks.  I recently gave you a tour of my closet in my How I Organize My Closet post and I also recently talked about Dressing With Intention.  Today’s post is a sort of continuation of those two themes with the idea of purchasing items you know will be able to be more than one way by utilizing items you already have.  I have the mentality now to purchase “outfits”, not individual pieces.

Striking a balance between casual and dressy is something I do on weekends as well as working due to my field of an interior designer.  Today I am showing three outfits I wore recently by using the same two pieces…a button down navy and ivory printed Ikat tunic top and a pair of bright coral jeggings.  The principals here can go for any printed top and colored bottom that you may already have in your closet.

When I first got these two pieces, I had this outfit planned.  My intention, if you will.  I even showed it in a video on my YouTube channel as a preview of items I recently purchased.  This long printed tunic is soft and flowy.  It even has pockets!  The navy blue and coral colors together are a classic combination that I have worn many times before.  Having this base outfit done, I was ready to branch out and style the top and bottoms in a look all their own with items I already had.

To style these coral jeggings, I took a cue from the color.  The orange tone made me think of this colorful floral tote that has similar coloring in it.  From there, I took the colors from the handbag to complete the top half of the outfit by pairing the pants with a simple white tank and cropped green lace jacket.  I would have never thought to pair these items together had it not been for the bag and I am so glad I did.  When I wore this I got tons of compliments and ladies coming up to me asking where I had gotten certain items.  I love how outfits give me opportunities to talk to other ladies about fashion and other topics too.  It has allowed me to form some wonderful relationships with people.  Again, what a great intention to have!

Another intention I had when I purchased this tunic was to somehow style it as a vest.  Unbuttoned, this printed top became a great loose jacket so to speak over a ruffled tank.  I have been looking for a piece in this unexpected spring color that is a brownish-rusty red and was so happy to find this one.  I love the cascading ruffles and the fact that it has adjustable spaghetti straps that I can pull to their shortest length, perfect for us short waisted ladies!

And yes, I am going there, a remix feature within a remix blog post!  Each of these three outfits have items I have worn in previous posts.

Do you purchase “outfits” vs. individual pieces?  Do you have any tricks you use for remixing your wardrobe?

  1. I have to just say that we think alike girl!!! First off your printed shirt—worn as a vest—that’s kinda what I’m doing on the blog today with the shirt dress!
As for remixing—I decided to try to do less laundry this week, so I’ve worn my yellow jeans & white lace top for the last three days. I’ve just switch out the sweaters/jackets, shoes & accessories (and it doesn’t hurt that I don’t see the same people every day–ha ha)!
It really helps me realize how versatile some items are!!

    1. I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw your shirt dress as a jacket post! And yet another thing we are alike with, I will do that to with wearing a piece without laundering it several days a week, especially with jackets and cardigans. It does make you think about all the ways you can wear one piece.

  2. I usually buy individual items, but always try to have, in the back of my mind, an idea what the item I’m buying will “go with”. What I love is when something I didn’t even think of putting together, comes together and I have a new outfit I love! Terrific idea of using a buttoned shirt as a little jacket/vest- I’m totally stealing that!! Great blog ideas today!!

    1. That is a fantastic mind set to have because I have run across so many ladies who have a closet full of items, yet they cannot create an outfit with anything within them because nothing goes together. And yes, steal that idea away about wearing the shirt as a jacket/vest!

  3. Love how you did this! You have such a great vision for putting pieces together. I can’t decide which is my favorite, because I like them all. Love the tunic as a vest. I never would have thought of that. And thanks for mentioning that you have a youtube channel. I don’t have tons of time so I don’t explore the internet a great deal and I rarely ever go to youtube. I will have to check it out! Thanks for more inspiration. – Amy
