Having experience with wearing loads of color, I sometimes can overlook the possibilities that black and white pieces have.  My eye is not usually drawn to this palette, but when I saw the Dotted Border Handkerchief Skirt on the Avenue site, I wanted to try it.  Ever since I tried on my first handkerchief hem piece, I fell in love with the ethereal qualities it possesses.

Today I am taking this black and white polka dot skirt with a simple white tank and denim jacket and creating two outfits just by switching out the necklace, handbag, and shoes.  I have always known the power of accessories and this really drives home how changing out these pieces can make such a difference.  The black and white palette acts as a beautiful base for highlighting the accessories.

Ok, I know that technically the blue in the denim jacket is not part of the black & white, and in this case it is acting as a neutral.  For this first look, I decided to do something I normally do not do and go totally with black and white accessories.  A faux marble pendant gives a lovely touch to the white tank while the black shoes and handbag provide an understated chic look.  While this is not my initial way I would have gone, I wanted to expand my horizons and I am so glad I did.  There is something to be said for a beautiful black and white outfit.  I love how with the print, silhouette, and details, I was able to make this nontraditional color scheme to me very much my personality.

And excuse the doggie tail in this last picture here.  Luke is often roaming around as I snap pictures before I begin my day in the mornings.  This is also the reason I sometimes have a huge grin on my face because he is usually doing something to make me laugh.

The great thing about me adding black and white pieces to my wardrobe is the pure fact that they are wonderful for highlighting the many colorful accessories that I have.  For this second look I switched out the necklace, shoes, and handbag for a complimentary color scheme of yellow and purple.  I was inspired when I saw Jodie of Jodie’s Touch of Style create a look with these tones.  My beaded necklace I have had for a while looks stunning against the white tank and contains both the yellow and purple colors.  I wanted to also show how this skirt looks with both flats from the first look and heels in this look, so my yellow block heel sandals were perfect.  To complete the outfit, my purple suede fold over clutch is added.  This take with the color gives a more playful feel.

Give this girl a full skirt and she will twirl, I just can’t help it.  This skirt is a gorgeous chiffon that flows as you walk.  The lining underneath ends at the knee, so the handkerchief hem really gets to play when it moves.  It has a comfortable elastic waistband that allows me to wear this with ease all day long.  The ribbed tank got a knot put in it that is hidden in the pictures under the denim jacket.  It adds a little drape and finishes this looks off perfectly without having to tuck it in, wear a belt, or leave it hanging loose.  It also dresses up this very casual piece just a tad.

  1. I’m so drawn to the colorful accessories—to me they pop the outfit!!
Of course, I realize many of the women in my generation feel the need to “match” with the other items they are wearing—but it’s good to add variety!!

    1. Yes, I know, I remember being taught the matching thing too. As you know, I rarely wear black and white, but I wanted to experiment a little. I am drawn more to the colorful look though too!

  2. First I have to say I LOVE this skirt! Both of the stylings look fantastic. But, I am definitely drawn to the more colorful accessorizing! Everything just pops against the backdrop of the black and white skirt and the simple denim jacket! Awesome!

  3. I love me some black and white and I love jean jackets! So I’m loving this look and how you styled them with the different accessories and I think both ways are really great. I’m not good with colorful accessories so I adore how you used them in this post!

    1. Yes, I saw that! Wonderful! You should see me swish around when I wear things like this, I make any excuse to turn around really fast to make the skirts twirl. 🙂
