Over the past few years, I have been gravitating more and more towards skirts and dresses. There is something so easy about them to me and I love the comfort they provide. Wearing them for day time can sometimes pose a problem for me because they tend to go a little more on the dressy side. While I am not one to feel out of place because I am overdressed, I still like to have casual outfits as an option for appropriate events, say for going out to lunch with friends, attending a family get together, or weekend shopping.
To “dress down” a dress, I typically use the same formula to put a look together. For today’s post, I chose my Avenue Navy Plaid Fit and Flare Dress that I have already featured in the post Spring 2016 Trend: Abstract Plaid where I dressed it up a bit. I got some major compliments on it from both people I knew and perfect strangers while out and about.
By popping on a denim jacket, a fun necklace, and flats over this dress gives it a flirty and casual look. I kept the color palette simple with mostly blue with touches of white and brown. The painterly plaid pattern gives an artistic flair that I absolutely adore, while the basic denim jacket adds texture.
By keeping the handbag simple, I am allowing the dress to take center stage. And sometimes it is just nice not to lug a whole bunch of stuff around, am I right?!! I wear this one like a bracelet most of the time so I do not have to worry about carrying anything. It also forces me to not have so much junk in my bag.
I have a thing for lace up flats. I have three in my collection currently, all in different colors and varying styles. Although these are a little more intricate than the basic ballet flat, I love the detail it adds to the foot.
- Navy Plaid Fit and Flare Dress: Avenue
- Denim Jacket: Old Navy
- Tan Suede Lace-Up Flats: No Rest For Bridget
- Wooden Beads Tassel Necklace: Charming Charlie
- Navy Wristlet: Michael Kors (similar)
So that is how I make a dress casual: casual layer, fun jewelry, and flats. I am one for getting the most out of the items in my closet, so I do not like waiting for special occasions to break out a dress. And I also had several ladies ask me where I got this dress the day I wore it this way too, and I was happy to share with them.
How about you? Do you wear dresses and skirts in casual settings? How do you style them to make them appropriate?
