Spring 2016 Trend: Lightweight Denim

One of my favorite things to do is to browse through a fashion magazine and see what the latest seasons trends are and how I can apply them to my lifestyle.  Instead of reading and then buying, I do it the other way around and look, then shop my closet to see what I already have that I can use to rock a trend.  Today I am partnering with my friend Amy of Full Figured & Fashionable to showcase the Lightweight Denim trend that is popular for Spring 2016 and in my opinion, a closet staple and more than a fleeting trend.

What I love so much about denim is that it is timeless.  It can be paired with practically any color and any print.  It can be casual and it can also be really dressed up.  Denim represents a kind of ease that conveys a message of approachability to others.  It comes in so many different forms from dresses to shirts.  I am especially wanting to try on some of the shorter, wide leg pant versions in a lightweight denim that is the culotte.  I have no idea what they would look like on my body, but I sure want to try!

Although I had a few denim pieces to choose from in my closet, I decided to feature this Ava & Viv chambray dress I have had for a little bit.  It is the perfect dress for layering over with its lightweight fabric and simple design.  With Spring having a little chill in the air, I popped on this jacquard knit cardigan from H&M.  It is from their straight size line, but due to its generous cut, it works for me.  I also love how the blue in the cardi picks up the blue of the dress.

To go along with the south western feel of the cardigan, I slipped on my fringed booties from Charming Charlie.  I opted for my “always with me” satchel that is probably seen in every other post.  It was the perfect sister lunch date outfit as we chatted over our favorite fish tacos.

And more times than not, you will see me with a necklace and this outfit is no exception.  I have a great attachment to this stone slab necklace that I finally found on Poshmark after seeing it at Anthropologie years prior.  I love how it adds a little more color to this entire ensemble.

  1. Oooo I love this outfit. I actually thrifted a similar light denim dress last year but ended up donating it back after a few months because of where the waistband hit. It did not look very good on my body shape. But yours looks lovely. I need to find more light denim pieces!

    1. Ah, the dreaded waistband. I have that issue all the time with dresses. This one still is a little blousier on top that I think it is supposed to, but I still like the way it looks. At first I thought this was a bad purchase, but now I see its potential because I have already worn it so much!

  2. Janeane you are inspiring! I love denim! It is my go to wardrobe staple, but I never really thought about the denim shirt dress or pairing denim with denim as Amy did. Thank you again for such great ideas! I love the outfit and you are right about the necklace. It adds that extra special look!

    1. Oh, you are so sweet. I know, I have never done an outfit like Amy, but looking at hers, I think I need to because it is so cute. Yah, this necklace has a way of adding the wow factor.
