Red Riding Hood: A Casual Valentine’s Day Look

Sentiments get me.

Reminiscing about loved ones that are no longer with you can sneak up at the most unexpected times.

That is exactly what happened when I was browsing at one of my favorite thrift shops and I saw a red knitted cardigan with a hood.  I rarely wear red and have maybe one other piece in the color in my closet.  Not that I have anything against red, it has just not been on a special enough garment to come home with me.  Really it was not the color that attracted me, but rather the texture.  The chunky knit with a semi open weave reminded me so much of something my grandmother would have made for herself.  I have a couple of cardigans of hers, but she was a tiny woman, and well, I am not, so wearing them myself is out of the question.  This sweater however was so reminiscent of her pieces that I had to get it.

I posted a picture of the label on Instagram when I got home asking if anyone was familiar with Moda International because I had no idea.

Some wonderful ladies informed me that it is a Victoria’s Secret brand.  Who knew?  Not me!  Well, really that did not matter to me as I am not a brand name person, but curiosity was getting to me.  Anyhow, I came up with a simple and fun way to wear it for a casual Valentine’s Day look…my Red Riding Hood look.

A simple white swing tunic tee I just picked up from the clearance section at Torrid underneath the cardigan makes the orangy-red stand out.  Skinny jeans in a dark wash make the outfit easy to wear for a day date.  And true to character, I added a funky colored wood necklace that I got from Anthropologie a while ago as well as a zebra pattern clutch.  This entire ensemble is a bit retro vintage with billowing bell sleeves that makes me smile.  To finish it off, my Payless black lace up flats get added to the mix.

So that is my sentimental outfit that ended up being a perfect fit for the upcoming Valentine’s Day!  Do you ever get pieces because they remind you of something happy?

  1. I love the thought of clothing being tied to sentiment and memories of loved ones. That’s so powerful! In other news, you look drop dead gorgeous in red and you really should wear it more often! The red riding hood look is so cute on you as are those shoes!!! Oh my word, those are fabulous. Might have to pick those up from Payless!

    1. I am so surprised that I do not have any other red in my closet. It has not been intentional and now I think I should seek it out a bit more. Thank you for your sweet compliment. And these shoes are SUPER comfy. They are perfect for both work and play. I wish they came in more colors, like red!

    1. Thank you Suzanne. I had to beef up my flats collection due to my hip injury. No heels for four months so far, but hopefully I will be able to soon. Shoes like this have made it much more fun to wear flats!

  2. Oh this sweater is cute, the chunky knit is super cute and the color is great. I love the color red but i lean more towards deeper reds so I don’t really own much colors like this but I like the color red. But yeah your outfit is simple but I love how you have aspects to the outfit that make it interesting, like the clutch and the necklace.

But yes, I definitely dress with things that remind me of people and things because it makes me feel happy and that I have a loved one close. I like to think I dress a little with my heart! hehe

    1. Thank you for your observations about it being simple, but with interest & personality through accessories. I tend to get too close to my outfits and do not always have perspective the way others do.

And I know you have posted several times about wearing items that hold good memories about loved ones. I loved your most recent ones about the sports tee and the ethnic top. You have a really good eye for those types of things and I find that very special.
