Now and Later: Styling Floral Prints for Summer and Fall

Florals…are they only for Spring and Summer?

I say NO WAY!

Today I am teaming up with my friends Nina of Curvy Mod, Hailey of Discourse of a Divine Diva, and Liz of With Wonder and Whimsy to show you how to wear a floral print the here and now in the heat of summer and then transition that same piece into a look perfect for the fall season.  In essence, you are going to see two looks from each of us, so in total you are getting eight inspiration outfits!  See those florals in the collage above?  These are all closeups of the prints we are working with.  Mine is the bottom left.  You will have to click on over to the other gals sites to see who’s is who’s.  Hey, a little mystery and intrigue is good.

For my floral piece, I selected the Edria Top that I picked up at the Anthropologie tag sale several weeks ago.  It is sleeveless with a chiffon front and jersey back in the same print.  A waist tie and flowy surplice neckline drew me instantly to this multi colored top.  The floral has a watercolor effect on a light, ivory background with a combination of dark teal, blue, green, orange, rust, pink, and yellow tones.

Wear It Now

For my “wear it now” look, I decided to pair the top with a textured navy A-line skirt that has a sheer peek-a-boo panel at the bottom hem.  I posted an outfit with this skirt on Instagram and got a resounding response as to where I got it.  I got this beauty second hand, but I selected several options in the outfit details below.  To stay cool, I opted to not add a cardigan or jacket, but rather layered with an ultra soft open weave scarf in a muted lilac that picks up a color in my top.  A coral ring, turquoise cuff, blue woven clutch, and nude pointy toe flats provide the perfect compliment to this romantic vintage look that I was going for.

I wore this to go to tea with my mom a few weeks ago.  It was just the right look for the environment of the french tea house.  We dined on scones and sandwiches all while sipping Orange Spice tea.  It was a wonderful day talking over a pretty lace tablecloth with my most favorite woman in the world.

What makes this a good summer outfit is the pure fact of having enough breathing room for my skin.  It has been a hot and humid summer here in Southern California.  Having my arms and legs out was exactly what this weather ordered.Florals

Wear It Later

In anticipation for cooler weather, I planned this outfit with the same floral top, but this time with layers and coverage.  Autumn on the West Coast includes crisp, cool breezes without getting too cold.  To accomplish this I selected a green lace jacket that will give a bit of warmth.  I swapped out the skirt for a pair of dark wash slim leg jeans and the flats for some peep toe booties.  The green from the jacket gets carried through with the agate pendant necklace.  I decided to keep the same clutch as the first look because I loved the mix of patterns, colors, and textures here with the floral, lace, stone, and woven leather.  Even the bangle gets pulled into the pattern mix with having a snake print on it.  The neutral color keeps it from being too distracting.   Florals

I would not say that the bright emerald green is a traditional “fall” color, but I do not typically follow those types of rules.  To me, the rich vibrancy of the jacket provides that jewel tone that is always associated with this season.  I can see myself wearing this in the office and meetings with clients all while being super comfortable.Florals

  1. You are truly a master at playing with colors, textures, and patterns. I absolutely love the combination of carefully curated elements in your summer look. I want to wear that outfit! And the bright green lace blazer in the fall look is so vibrant and vivacious for fall.

    1. Working with color, texture, and pattern is something I love to do and want to delve a little more into, perhaps as a series here on Designing From My Closet. Thank you!
