Summer Layers

Summer Layers

For many years, I used to be called the “Cardigan Queen”.  After doing a count in my closet of how many I had, I felt like I was really limiting myself to all the other wonderful layering possibilities out there.  The hot, summer months have always been challenging for me because I do love to layer.  I also like to be comfortable and not be sweating in a cardigan or jacket if I can help it, especially on the weekends.

I took a fast snapshot of myself in a look I see many ladies sporting in my neck of the woods: a simple tank, skinny jeans, neutral colored bag and flats with my hair pulled back quickly into a ponytail.  Nothing wrong with the look, but I feel like there is something missing.  Although the tank gives me great color in hot pink, the lack of structure in the top does not do much for my figure or highlight any of my personality.  I could add a fun cardigan or jacket, but with temps rising, I do not want to add any extra means of producing more heat.

Enter, the vest.  The one I have has a built in drawstring that gives my torso some shape.  By leaving it unzipped and just tying it, I still get to show off the color of the tank.  I swapped out the neutral satchel for a colorful floral tote and beaded sandals that bring in more of that wonderful pink color.  The last touch is a statement medallion necklace that gives some personality without having too much bulk around my neck.  I also took a little more time and pulled my hair loosely over to the side to give a more interesting look while still allowing it to be off my neck.  Or try a bun like Liz of With Wonder & Whimsy as she demonstrates how to get her look in her Hair Tutorial.

Here are some options I found that can easily be added to any solid colorful tank and jeans for a fun and casual look for a hot summer weekend.Summer Layers Options

  1. I used to be a “Cardigan Queen” too. And before that, I wore blazers. As a college student, not as a teacher. How much sense does that make? lol It was bootcut jeans, a lace cami, and two-button blazers, usually in velvet or velour. I was the coolest! haha

It’s only recently that I’ve started expanding my other layering options as well. It was only last summer that I bought my first denim jacket as an adult, and now I’m obsessed with denim jackets and moto jackets in an array of colors.

I don’t typically think layering when I think summer, so this post definitely gave me some fresh ideas for layering in creative ways during the warmer months. I’ve usually stayed away from vests because they’re sleeveless, but I’m starting to get bolder about going sleeveless. And as your outfit board suggests, I can always layer a sleeveless overpiece over something with sleeves.

    Thanks for the tips, Janeane!

    1. Haha! That is so funny you had the same issue. I still love cardigans, I am just starting to branch out a bit. This is the first summer of really ramping up my hot weather fashion. Blame it on the blog! And yes, I think layering a vest over a short sleeved top is perfect too. So glad you liked the post.

    1. Thanks Justine! I get “layering withdrawals” during the summer, so this year I am determined to not do without. So happy you enjoyed the post!
